Reel of Fortune Fishing Report: Red Snapper Fishing Heats Up While Giant Gag Grouper Steal the Show
Red Snapper Fishing Was Good… But the Gags Had Other Ideas
If you’ve spent enough time offshore, you know one thing for certain:
The fish don’t read the fishing reports.
On this week’s episode of Reel of Fortune aboard the GulfStar Endurance, we headed offshore expecting solid red snapper fishing, but Mother Nature and the fish had a few surprises waiting for us.
As the sun disappeared below the horizon, the first night started with non-stop action from mangrove snapper. The quantity was there, but the quality wasn’t exactly what we were looking for.
The fish were biting.
They just weren’t the right size.
Fortunately, Capt. Che wasn’t interested in settling.
After a couple strategic moves, everything changed.
Suddenly the rods started bending harder, the coolers started filling faster, and quality mangrove snapper began hitting the deck. Then the yellowtail snapper showed up and joined the party.
Now we were talking.
Sunrise Means Red Snapper Time
As daylight spread across the Gulf, it was time to focus on what everyone came for.
Red Snapper Fishing.
The morning bite was productive, and anglers quickly put some beautiful American Red Snapper in the fish boxes.
Big shoulders.
Bright red sides.
The kind of fish that make every offshore fisherman smile when they come over the rail.
Like many summer trips, however, the afternoon snapper bite slowed down.
But that’s when experienced captains start looking for opportunities instead of excuses.
Red Grouper, Big Porgies, and Surprise Gag Grouper
With the red snapper bite taking a break, we shifted our attention toward red grouper and jumbo porgies.
The move paid off.
Several quality red grouper came aboard along with some hefty porgies that kept anglers busy throughout the afternoon.
Then the real surprise arrived.
Massive “Rusty Belly” Gag Grouper.
One after another, giant gag grouper started showing up from the depths.
Unfortunately, these fish had to be released, but seeing so many healthy gag grouper is excellent news for Gulf anglers and a reminder of just how strong the fishery can be when conditions are right.
Every fisherman onboard agreed:
When gag grouper fishing reopens, these fish are going to make some serious noise.
Sunset Brings Another Red Snapper Flurry
Just when things seemed to be winding down, the Gulf reminded us why offshore fishing is so addictive.
As the sun dipped toward the horizon, the red snapper woke up again.
Lines tightened.
Drags sang.
High-fives started flying around the rail.
Several more quality red snapper found their way into the coolers before darkness took over.
Yellowtail Snapper Take Over the Night Shift
The second night belonged to the yellowtails.
And there were a lot of them.
Mixed with a steady mangrove snapper bite, anglers stayed busy throughout the evening putting together impressive catches while enjoying calm Gulf conditions and a beautiful night offshore.
The fish boxes grew heavier.
The bait boxes grew lighter.
The smiles grew bigger.
That’s usually a good sign.
The GulfStar Endurance Delivers Again
